The National Cancer Institute guide's to essential oil use provides information on the use of essential oils in supportive cancer treatment. The clinical trials with essential oils center around the use in helping reduce anxiety and improve sleep.
Many oils are on the GRAS list (Generally Recognized AS Safe) list according to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic act. Some oils have antibacterial properties. Some of the oils such as camphor can cause contact dermatitis when applied topically.
Tea tree oils and lavender are weak estrogen promoters and also have anti-androgenic effects. Because of this, topical use of these essential oils is not recommended for patients with estrogen dependent tumors. This recommendation is based on the results of one study. Future studies will help clarify the strength of this effect.
